Victorian

Maybe it is tied in with my struggle to make things simple but i just can not resist architecture that is sometimes just too over the top. I have always loved Victorian houses and am lucky enough to own one even if it is not the grandest. Some of the examples here show the best (or worst depending on your view) of Victorian buildings especially when there is a gothic element to the designs.

A local building of interest is St Joseph’s Orphanage which is now empty and forgotten and hidden away near Preston City centre. Another building that was local to me for many years was the Nicholson Institute in Leek which was designed by William Sugden. As well as a library and reading room it also contained an art gallery and museum. This contained many curiosities such as a collection of silk moths which i remember viewing as a child. With the Art School forming part of the building i ended up spending many happy years using the building. Also my parents lived opposite as they were both lecturers at the Art School.
