The subject of cabinets of curiosities is a theme that fascinates me. What is even more intriguing is that originally a cabinet meant a room rather than a cabinet as we think of them today. So the early museums and collections could be refered to as cabinets of curiosity. They contained relics or geological and archeological items. Some of the cabinets and drawers that we see today are condensed versions of these rooms.
An interesting programme i have been watching recently is called oddities which is about a shop in American called ‘Obscura Antiques and Odities’ which in its own way is a cabinet of curiosities. I have to admit some of the items they sell are a bit on the weird side and definitely ‘oddities’.
